Do you keep your van at home or at your workplace overnight? Either way, this is the ideal time to recharge in preparation for the next day. Many employers across the country are starting to offer charging access.
Grants are available for home chargers. And, some vehicles even come with free charger installation. If you have home or off-street parking, you can install a wall box charger. This is the most practical option to recharge your electric van.
However, electric vans can be plugged in with a regular socket. Also, many electricity providers are happy to discuss low-rate overnight tariffs. This will reduce your motoring costs.
Will you be driving your electric van around all day? If so, there may be times when you need to top it up at a public charging point. More public charging points are being installed across the UK all the time. Currently, there are over 12,000 public charging points in the UK. This ensures you can charge your van at petrol stations, supermarkets, leisure centres and car parks.
Today, most electric vans come with a built-in sat-nav. These have a database of available charging stations nearby. Alternatively, there are plenty of apps you can download yourself. These apps can help you find stations nearby, such as Zap Map or Open Charge Map.
Generally, the added weight of an electric van tech isn’t an issue for smaller vans. However, for larger vans, it can be more of an issue. An unloaded electric van typically weighs slightly more than an unloaded diesel van, due to the weight and presence of the battery packs in an electric van.
The legal maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) for a standard UK driving license is 3.5 tonnes. The majority of large vans already use all of this allowance, right down to the last kilogram. As electric vans weigh more than vehicles powered by a diesel engine, they generally have less capacity for payload. As a result of this the maximum GVW for a standard UK driving licence has been raised to 4.25 tonnes if driving an electric vehicle.
Adding weight to any van – electric or diesel – will have a negative effect on energy consumption, so it’s important not to be put off by payloads. Just because a van runs on electricity, it doesn’t mean it’s any poorer at carrying big loads. The extra weight may result in a reduction in range, which means you’ll need more power to get moving. This can shorten the range of your van, making it more suitable for short trips and meaning it may require charging more often.

If you purchase a low-emission vehicle, you don’t need to do anything. The dealer will include the value of the grant in the vehicle’s price. The amount of grant you receive will depend on the vehicle you purchase. And, which category this vehicle falls into. There are six categories consisting of vehicles eligible for grant:
Electric van government grants are different for small vans and for large vans. Read on to find out how the government differentiates these vans, and what the grants are.
If the van weighs less than 2,500kg, have CO2 emissions less than 50g/km, and can travel at most 96 km (60 miles) without emitting any emissions, then these electric vans are considered “small”.
For small electric vans, up to £2,500 will be granted to cover up to 35% of their purchase price.
You can also claim up to 1,000 truck and van plug-in grants each year for your company or organization. Each year, the limit is reset at 1 April.

It’s important to note that only vehicles that have been approved by the government are eligible for the grant. Aftermarket conversions do not qualify for the grant; instead, the van must have been built or converted to electric power prior to first registration.

Additional grants such as the Electric Vehicles Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) or the On-street Residential ChargePoint Scheme (ORCS) may assist individuals and businesses with residential and commercial charging points.

London was the first city to introduce the UK’s first ULEZ. The ULEZ is a defined area in which all vehicles have to meet strict emission requirements or face a daily fee to travel. The aim is to combat air pollution by discouraging drivers from driving through the most polluted areas in unsuitable (or in other words, non-electric or high emission) vehicles. The UK government also has plans to allow local authorities to introduce clean air zones.
The UK Government has a mission to ensure all new cars in the UK will be “effectively zero emission” by 2040. This long-term strategy has two main aims: to improve air quality across the UK by discouraging the use of polluting vehicles, and to reduce the number of areas in the UK where air pollution breaches legal limits. In a nutshell, Clean Air Zones are being put in place to encourage people to drive electric vehicles and more modern petrol and diesels.
Five cities across the UK will be introducing Clean Air Zones over the next few years: Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Bath. In addition, 28 local authorities with expected illegal pollution levels by 2021 must also determine whether or not a Clean Air Zone is required.
